Cornish Pasties: the nation’s most widely recognised GI product!
Cornish Pasties have been revealed to be the most widely recognised Geographical Indication product in the UK. According to a recent market research report by Brand Dialogue, 87.6% of people surveyed across the UK were familiar with Cornish Pasties and 53.4% were aware of their PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status, meaning the Cornish Pasty was the highest in both studies. We worked very hard to get the Cornish Pasty its PGI status, so it's amazing to see it so widely recognised - even above Jersey Royal potatoes who came second, at 48.2%, followed by Scotch whisky at 48%.
It shows that having the PGI status really is appreciated, with 71.4 % of British consumers saying they believe that they are much more likely or somewhat more likely to purchase products with a geographical indication. This is great news for everyone in the Cornish Pasty Industry, but especially the CPA who work so hard to promote the Cornish Pasty and its PGI status. They received their own specific (and very well deserved) mention for great events like Cornish Pasty Week and the World Pasty Championships.
The study also looked into how people view products with the PGI status, with most associating them with premium quality and authenticity - two things that we are proud of here at Cornish Premier Pasties. People felt that the products preserve tradition and culture, which is exactly what we believe the Cornish Pasty does. Having a high standard of production and superior taste were also strong features - so overall the results were very positive.
What do you think of the results? Do you think the Cornish Pasty was a deserving winner? We'd love to hear from you!
